ComEd and Nicor Gas in Illinois have started a pilot program designed to help customers who own Honeywell smart thermostats cut energy expenses associated with cooling and heating their homes.
Illinois’ largest electric and natural gas utilities will leverage Whisker Labs’ Connected Savings service, which delivers energy intelligence to consumers through the integration of IoT-connected smart home devices, proprietary weather data and its predictive algorithms.
Consumers will realize energy saving through thermostat optimization and engagement. Specifically, the program seeks to enroll 3,000 ComEd / Nicor Gas customers who already have a Honeywell Wi-Fi thermostat installed in their home.
The pilot objective is to learn how connected thermostats can be improved with advanced analytics. Whisker Labs’ innovative thermostat optimization service has demonstrated energy savings above and beyond the average savings typically delivered by connected thermostats on their own, says Whisker Labs.
Connected Savings create a detailed and precise thermodynamic model for each individual home to understand how a home will respond to changes in the weather on any particular day. With this model, custom cooling and heating schedules are developed and sent to the thermostat to maximize energy efficiency, while maintaining homeowner comfort.
Using information from the thermodynamic model, the platform also provides homeowners with personalized insights detailing home efficiency down to the equipment level, along with tips for improving efficiency and boosting energy savings.
“Our Connected Savings service with its intelligent energy efficiency and personalized customer engagement capabilities enables energy providers to access incremental energy savings from connected devices within their programs,” said Amena Ali, chief revenue officer at Whisker Labs.
