USB charger maker Anker has been pushing its smart home products under the brand name Eufy, and its latest launch is an Echo Dot-like smart speaker with a lower price.
Eufy Genie is a smart speaker that integrates Amazon Alexa. In other words, it supports the same services and smart products working with the Echo products. And of course, Eufy Genie will support the over 15,000 Alexa skills. “Genie is just a cheaper version of the Amazon Echo Dot,” CNET writes.
In terms of hardware, Genie uses Amazon’s far-field voice recognition technology. In terms of look, Eufy’s smart speaker has the same black cylinder design with a blue glowing ring on the top, just like the Echo Dot. As for sound quality, the company claims to perform better than the Echo Dot but doesn’t specify “how better.”
The only thing that differentiate it from the Echo Dot is its 30% lower price. The Eufy Genie costs US$35 while Amazon sells the Echo Dot for US$50. “Eufy Genie users will be able to enjoy the majority of benefits Alexa offers at an accessible price point,” said Steven Yang, the CEO of Anker Technology.
The other difference from the real Echo device is that Genie won’t get service updates in real time as can Amazon devices. For example, while Spotify already works with the Amazon Echo, Genie will get Spotify integration with a software update after product launch.
In addition to the smart speaker, Eufy has other smart product line-up this year. Its Lumos Smart Bulb will arrive in late August, and Eufy robotic vacuum in September, while smart light strip, plug and switch will be rolled out later.
Since all the smart home products support Amazon Alexa, they will also work with Eufy’s smart speaker Genie. It is, in other words, a smart home ecosystem that is built around another company’s platform.
Eufy Genie will be sold on Amazon starting from August 16 for US$35.
