At the beginning of the year, Sonos’ new CEO Patrick Spence said the company’s smart speakers will be integrated with multiple platforms. According to the company’s FCC filing for its new product, the promise will soon come true.
Tech blogger Dave Zatz has attained an FCC filing referencing a product model S13 from Sonos that will “integrate voice control functionality” and support “multiple voice platforms and music services.”
This could be a sign that Sonos is developing a smart speaker which may enable conversation with Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant or Cortana. (Given Apple’s preference not to allow others enter its ecosystem, it’s less likely that it will open up Siri to Sonos developers.)
In such case, Sonos’ new speaker could become a powerful weapon against others currently in the market, such as Amazon Echo and Google Home.
Sonos is known for making speakers with quality sound, while Amazon Echo and Google Home have both received suggestions on making sound quality improvement. This is why Amazon is looking to make a new model of Echo with better sound quality.
Considering Sonos speaker’s quality sound and multi-assistant support, consumers are more likely to get it instead of Amazon Echo or Google Home.
“The next few years will define our future as we step into the big leagues – partnering and competing with global leaders like Amazon, Google and (likely) Apple,” Spence wrote in the letter to employees when he first started his CEO duty. “We have already proven the ability to do this in an elegant and reliable way with music services. We are going to do the same with voice services, bringing all the services that matter to every home.”
The FCC filing also offers a glimpse on the new speaker’s user interface. It has a circular design and features a microphone, pause and two other unknown buttons on two sides. Like Echo devices and Google Home, the S13 model will also have far-field microphones.
Specific release date of this Sonos product is unknown; meanwhile, Apple’s first smart speaker HomePod is expected to ship in year’s holiday season.
