New Technology of Smart Home Broadband Internet Access: G.fast
The market of health care, smart building, smart home are predicted to rapidly grow. “IoT is the potential growing market and the major trend of global business. Especially, smart Home industry, the key noteworthy category accounts for 40% in this market,” commented Irving H.C. Tai, chief Information officer of Institute of Information Industry. However, a complete smart home environment should collocate with the efficient high bandwidth network for future 4K/8K media and cross-media applications. CHT Broadband Networks Laboratory Director, Mr. Shiang-Ming Chen, introduced G.fast for breaking through the above worries and also solving the problem of difficulties in constructing fibre to home. The technology of G.fast is based on ITU standard for the next generation of broadband access (G.9700/G.9701). Applying the structure of fibre to FTTdp, 1Gbps transmission rate, breaks through the previous VDSL2 barrier significantly.

Importance of Common Platform and Interface Standards
“Challenges of IoT market include: interoperability, development complexity and security,” commented Dr. Bernard Shung, secretary of Open Interconnect Consortium/MediaTek. There are different devices from different vendors and also various kinds of sensors, gateways and APPs need to be integrated. IoT needs a suitable network protocol to support for solving the problems of devices: limited capability, unreliable bandwidth networks and asynchronous communication, etc. “Consequences of compromised IoT systems could be more severe disabling home security systems, flooding field and disrupting hospitals,” said Dr. Shung. Open standard is perceived to be less secure and hence the market needs a good solution that cover all devices, protocols. In Dr. Shung’s opinion, a good IoT standard should be open sources, can handle multiple vertical markets with a common framework and offers favorable IPR policy.
It is a highly creative period and now is the time for ideas of various kinds of standards. “There are 4 main alliances of IoT standards: Allseen Alliance, Open Interconnect Consortium, Thread Group and HomeKit,” commented Mr. Andrew Ho, section manager of Smart Network System Institute, III.

The Convergence Technology of Smart Home Heterogeneous Networks
Convergence is the main stream in nowaday market. The advantages of convergence technology include easily managing, secure, intelligently switching heterogeneous networks and aggregating several heterogeneous web flows. The convergence ability is related to the wireless communication technology, cost and transmission rate. Different wireless communication technology has its own characteristics.
There will be new problems of the convergence of heterogeneous networks: path selection and distribution of bandwidth resources. For example, the traditional method of choosing possible transmission path like Distance Vector or Link State will probably cause low efficiency. Therefore, combing different requirements of bandwidth and convergence technology is the key development of smart home industry.
