August Smart Locks may now be unlocked with Apple Watch, besides smartphones. August has unveiled a new app allowing users to both lock and unlock doors.
The app will work for all generations of August Lock and all series of Apple Watch. Users will also be able to view a log of recent activities on the watch, checking who has entered or exited the home and when. In addition, users can get real-time notifications on when the door is unlocked.
While the smartphone can serve as an alternative to the physical key, it is larger in size and is comparatively cumbersome. The advantage of the watch is that it is much more portable, which means users can go out for a jog or hit the gym with just the watch.
To enable the capability, the watch must run the WatchOS4 or higher operating system. To start controlling the August Smart Lock from Apple Watch, users need to first download and install the most recent August app on the iPhone, open the Apple Watch app, and then select August and turn on “Show App on Apple Watch” and “Glances.”
The new Apple Watch lock/unlock feature is available to any user who is set up as a house owner. Homeowners can grant access to “guest” by first opening the Guest List in the August app, tapping the Guest that you would like to promote to the owner status, and then update the access level to owner and save the changes.
After the Apple Watch and August Locks are synced and everything is set up properly, users should be able to see all the locks the user has on the Watch’s screen. A shortcut may also be added to enable easy access to a specific lock.
The phone is still required for the auto-unlock feature. It’s important to note that if you want to use Auto-Unlock, you will still need to have your phone nearby, since this feature relies on a few different technologies inside your iPhone.
