Yelp, a location review platform, has published its third Economic Outlook, showing an “enormous” growth in home automation businesses in major metro areas.
The report indicates business growth and health of urban economies in the U.S. This year smart home automation became one of Yelp’s fastest growing categories.
Although Yelp’s platform is mostly known for restaurant searches, it allows users to search and review locations in other categories as well, such as Beauty and Fashion, and Sports.
According to Yelp, the home and the local business are the platform’s fastest growing categories by revenue. In the first three months of 2018, the site saw two million visitors requesting a quote in homes and local service-based businesses.
Between the first quarter of 2017 and the first quarter of 2018, the platform saw a 30-percent increase in the total number of “home automation businesses.”
Yelp also listed the most searched keywords in the smart home category in 2018. The top phrase is security systems, followed by home automation and home theater installation.
“The rapid growth and industry response suggests that the rise of smart homes may not be a flash in the pan and has extended beyond the early adopter community,” writes Yelp in the report. Yelp pointed out that the trend is clearest among cities with healthy economies.
As for U.S. cities with strongest local business growth, Yelp ranked Austin, Texas on the top of the list, driven by the city’s growing tech sector and venture capital investment, followed by Miami, Atlanta, Phoenix and Charlotte, North Carolina.
