South Korean tech giant Samsung has announced that it will bring voice assistant Bixby to all its products, which number 14 million units in total, by 2020.
Some of Samsung’s products already support Bixby, including smartphones, televisions, refrigerators, air conditioners and washing machines.
At a press event held last week in Seoul, the company unveiled its upgraded AI voice platform – Bixby 2.0. The improved voice assistant will enable natural language processing, while enhancing the noise resistance capability and shortening the response time.
The first Samsung device to adopt Bixby 2.0 will be the company’s next flagship smartphone, the Galaxy Note 9. The model is expected to be introduced in August.
The company says it will keep improving its AI technologies, and possibly strengthen its AI business through mergers and acquisition. It plans to expand its AI-specialized workforce to up to 1,000 employees.
Bixby Updates in Home Appliances
Samsung will issue an update to Bixby for its family hub. Consumers are expected to welcome new features for voice control in their daily lives. For instance, they will be able to issue automation actions with various commands. When users say, “it’s hot today,” the air conditioner at home will automatically turn on; or simply say “good night” to switch off televisions and put the air conditioner in sleep mode.
Other features include having the refrigerator to generate re-stocking list and to remind food expiration dates; and having the washing machine to suggest the best washing cycle based on clothes types.
Some Samsung home appliances, including robot cleaners and ovens, will get Bixby support this year.
