After making Echo Look available exclusively to some invited customers, Amazon is ready to ship the device to all consumers in the U.S.
Amazon used a similar strategy to push its smart speaker Echo. The Echo Look has a different focus from Echo speakers. It aims to be a smart assistant for clothes companies capable of making fashion suggestions.
By saying “Alexa, take a photo” or “Alexa, take a video,” users can use the full-body selfies to more effectively organize the inventory of their wardrobes. While in clothes stores, they can double check in the Echo Look app whether a piece of the same style already sits at home.
The Alexa in the Echo Look also gives fashion feedback. With machine learning algorithm and opinions from real fashion experts, Echo Look will tell users what outfit looks better with reasons. The evaluation process takes about one minute and takes factors like body type, color, styling and current trends into consideration.
The Echo Look app suggests pieces that the assistant thinks will pair well with clothes users already have. And of course, these recommended clothes can be ordered via Amazon. Users may also sort their outfit photos by color in the Echo Look app.
Rather than positioned as a smart home control center like other Echo speakers, the Echo Look presents as a combination between fashion and technology.
According to Amazon, however, the full-power Alexa in the Echo Look did attract users to try more functions with the assistant. For instance, they used it as an alarm clock or asked Alexa about the weather since the device is placed mostly in bedrooms.
Amazon first announced Echo Look in April 2017. After one year of tests, the company has improved its features and is ready to sell the product to the mass market. The Echo Look is now available to all consumers in the U.S. for US$200.
