Although there’s no official Alexa app for the Apple Watch, a third-party app now allows users to talk to Alexa on the smartwatch.
The standalone app is called Voice in a Can. Apple Watch owners can use it while the device connects to a Wi-Fi or data network. Smartphones are not required to send Alexa commands to the Apple Watch.
Since it’s a third-party app, not all Alexa features can be found when using Voice in a Can. For instance, users won’t be able to make calls, play music or listen to daily briefings.
However, other features such as controlling smart home devices and third-party Alexa skills work normally on the Apple Watch. For example, they can talk to Alexa on the Apple Watch to turn off lights in the living room or to set their thermostat to a preferred temperature before arriving at home.
To launch the app, users will need to first sync the app with their existing Amazon accounts. To send Alexa a voice query, users are required to tap an icon within the app in order to have the assistant respond. A voice assistant’s always-listening feature only works with the native Siri on the Apple Watch.
Apple Watch is restricted to support Siri and none of the other voice assistants. Although Siri gets new capabilities along with the update of the new iOS 12, other open-platform voice assistants are still considered smarter than Siri for their abundant third-party application integration and AI intelligence.
Nonetheless, Voice in a Can will bring another possibility for Apple Watch owners living in a smart home. The app costs US$1.99.
Apple has allowed the official Alexa app to live in iPhones. Maybe the company will allow Alexa to live in the Apple Watch in the future.
