First unveiled at CES 2018, Kwikset’s new smart lock, the Kevo Contemporary, is now available for purchase online and in The Home Depot.
The Kevo Contemporary is the third-generation model of the Kevo series. Different from the traditional and round deadbolts, the lock has a square face and modern look with LED lights. And this new model has all features the previous models have.
The Kevo series allows homeowners to unlock the door simply by touching the lock with their smartphones. Once an authorized device, such as a smartphone, an Android Wear or Apple Watch, goes into the Bluetooth range, homeowners can tap the lock and unlock the door.
This touch-to-open feature can be beneficial to homeowners who have impaired mobility.
Kevo locks owners can offer e-keys for their friends or family members when they are not home. Visitors receiving e-keys can also use their mobile devices as the key to unlock the door. And homeowners can track every e-key activity from their mobile apps.
The Kevo Contemporary also work with other smart home devices. For example, for users who have Nest or Honeywell thermostats at home, locking or unlocking the door will trigger temperature adjustments; for those having Ring or Skybell video doorbell, they can unlock the door directly through their smartphones for visitors.
Kevo locks has its own Alexa skill, which lets users ask if the door is locked or unlocked with voice. It also works with IFTTT platform, so that users can add other triggering commands for the lock and other smart home actions.
The Kevo Contemporary is available at US$299. No international launch was mentioned. Homeowners will need the Kevo Plus, an internet-gateway module, to interact with their locks while not at home.
