Amazon is planning to launch a smart TV that will be targeted at the UK market. The TV is likely to be marketed under Amazon’s own brand, like Echo, Kindle and Fire TV.
The TV was reported developed with assistance from a group of Chinese manufacturers including Huawei, and is now being tested by DTG, the industry body that maintains broadcast technical specifications for the UK’s digital terrestrial television network.
The new TV will have the functionalities of the Fire TV stick, which gives users access to a range of online entertainment – including 500,000 movies and TV shows. It will also come with Alexa voice control.
With Alexa, users can find, launch, and control content with voice commands. For example, saying “Alexa, find suspense thrillers” and Alexa will show the results.
Fire TV’s Alexa can also play music from Pandora, order a pizza from Domino’s, shop for popcorn and snacks, etc. Moreover, Fire TV can be paired with an Echo device. All these Alexa capabilities are expected to arrive in Amazon’s new smart TV.
The smart TVs support a number of apps including Netflix, Sing, Hulu and Amazon’s own Prime Video programming.
Other smart TV models with Fire TV built-in are already available in the U.S. One is made by U.S.-based Element Electronics. There are other models made by Toshiba and Best Buy under its in-house brand Insignia.
