Netgear has introduced two new products for its Arlo line – the Arlo Audio Doorbell and Audio Chime, both of which work with Arlo smart cameras.
The Arlo Audio Doorbell aims to replace traditional doorbells. However, it is not equipped with a camera. It rings the door and has a speaker and a microphone so that homeowners can talk with visitors via their smartphones. If they’re not available at the time, visitors may leave a message at the door via the doorbell.
If homeowners really want to have a video feed of the visitor, they can install an Arlo security camera at the door to get the footage.
The Arlo Audio Doorbell is powered by two AA batteries, which can support one year of usage, according to Netgear.
Another new product, the Smart Chime, is designed to replace the existing chime at home. The Arlo Chime uses regular wall outlets and homeowners can install several around the house where regular ones couldn’t reach.
The new products are paired like a doorbell kit for homeowners. Whether they have Arlo cameras installed or not, users may be benefited from the new Arlo doorbell and chime.
Netgear’s move makes sense. The company already has security cameras for homes. A new smart doorbell product with camera could replace the current product. Netgear customers may find their Arlo cameras useless. But a doorbell kit that works with the camera can add value.
Nest, in contrast, adopts the strategy of having both a security camera and a smart doorbell with camera.
The Arlo Audio Doorbell and the Chime will arrive this fall. Netgear didn’t reveal price details. Since the doorbell is not equipped with a camera, the price may be more affordable than Nest or Ring products.
