Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide is rolling out the largest-scale deployment to date:
“Coming soon: SPG will roll out a revolutionary new program that puts the power of your room key on your mobile device. Soon Starwood Preferred Guest members can open their hotel room from their SPG App Ü no extra baggage. Consider this one more key to a better stay.”
While the website for this pilot program shares little information, a report by the Wall Street Journal sheds more light on the matter. Guests arriving at the Aloft Hotels in Manhatten or Silicon Valley will soon be able to skip the check-in line, instead directly entering their rooms using their smartphone as the key.
Users of older smartphones may be out of luck, as the company’s SPG app will only support this feature on iPhone 4S or newer models, or phones running Android 4.3 and up.
In an interview with the Journal, Frits van Paasschen, CEO of Starwood, said that technology and hardware had been developed in collaboration with Swedish lock maker Assa Abloy. By the end of 2015, the company hopes to roll out the keyless check-in program to all 123 of its luxury W Hotels and Aloft hotels.
